The INTAR Roots & New Music Festival is a forum for some of NYC?s leading and emergent composers, performers, and genre-bending musicians.
INTAR Theater will kick-off its third season (2012-2013) of concerts with our first INTAR Roots & New Music Festival on Friday and Saturday, November 16-17, 2012. Performers include guitarists Elliott Sharp and Cristian Amigo (guitar duo), Miguel Frasconi (glass instruments), The Guidonian Hand (trombone ensemble), violinist/composer Jason Kao Hwang, The Izzi Ramkissoon Ensemble, Gerard Every (Sephardic song), Rami El-Aasser (Arabic percussion), guitarist/composer Patrick Grant, and many others (see full list below).

Improvisational chamber duo Charlie Rauh and Concetta Abbate have swiftly established themselves on the NYC scene since their formation one year ago. Combining influences from 12th century plainchant, folk, free, and baroque, their concise guitar/violin pieces have been featured in a variety of venues ranging from Cornelia St Cafe to The Rubin Art Museum.
Patrick Grant is a composer, performer, and producer based in NYC. His music is informed by his experience and work with contemporary-classical and popular music (John Cage, Philip Glass, Quincy Jones, Kid Creole), the communal music of the Balinese Gamelan, and recently with his incipient work in the Guitar Circles of Robert Fripp. He has written scores for theatrical visionaries Robert Wilson, The Living Theatre, and companies in Brazil, London, and Dublin (2013). He is a recent recipient of the Con Edison – Exploring the Metropolis Musician Residency for the creation of a new work for multiple guitar ensemble.
Jason Kao Hwang (composer, violin/ viola) has created works ranging from jazz, classical, ?new? and world music. Stories Before Within (2008, Innova) featuring his jazz quartet EDGE, was chosen as one of the Top Ten CDs of 2008 by Coda Magazine. Mr. Hwang?s chamber opera, The Floating Box, A Story in Chinatown (New World Records), presented by the Asia Society in 2001, was named one of the ?Top Ten Opera Recordings of 2005? by Opera News. Commitment, The Complete Recordings, 1981-1983, from a collective quartet that was Mr. Hwang?s first band, was voted as ?2010 Reissued Recording of the Year? by All About Jazz / New York. His octet Burning Bridge, commissioned by Chamber Music America / New Jazz Works, recently premiered at the Chicago World Music Festival.Mr. Hwang has also received support from US Artists International, the American Music Center, Meet the Composer/New Residencies, the National Endowment for the Arts, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and others. Spontaneous River, Mr. Hwang?s orchestra of string improvisers, performed in Vision Festival XIV and will release the recording of Symphony of Souls in early 2011. As violinist, Mr. Hwang has worked with Reggie Workman, William Parker, Anthony Braxton, Vladamir Tarasov, Henry Threadgill and many others.
Izzi Ramkissoon is an award-winning electro acoustic multimedia composer, performer, and sound artist. He has written works for a variety of media including theater, dance, installations, alternative controllers, and interactive multimedia. His compositions deal extensively with the use of technology in composition and have been featured at SEAMUS, NYCEMF, SPARK, Look and Listen Festival, Black Maria Film + Video Festival, World Maker Faire, MATA and numerous other venues and festivals, both nationally and internationally. The Izzi Ramkissoon Ensemble fuses media, technology, IDM, hardcore, classical, musique concrete and various other resources to perform interactive, improvisatory, and experimental works. Miguel Frasconi uses electronics and an instrumentarium of glass objects to create music from a uniquely imagined tradition. His glass instruments are struck, blown, stroked, smashed, and otherwise coaxed into vibration. Miguel has worked closely with composers John Cage, Jon Hassell, James Tenney, Morton Subotnick, and has collaborated with many choreographers, including Alonzo King and modern dance pioneer Anna Halprin. He was a founding member of The Glass Orchestra, the internationally renowned new music ensemble featuring all glass instruments. Frasconi is a member of Ne(x)tworks, one of NYC?s leading new music ensemble, and teaches at Bard College where he directs the Bard Laptop Orchestra (BLOrk).
Elliot Sharp is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, and performer.A central figure in the avant-garde and experimental music scene in New York City since the late 1970s, Sharp has released over eighty-five recordings ranging from blues, jazz, and orchestral music to noise, no wave rock, and techno music. He pioneered the use of personal computers in live performance with his Virtual Stance project of the 1980s. He has used algorithms and fibonacci numbers in experimental composition since the 1970s. He has cited literature as an inspiration for his music and often favors improvisation. He is an inveterate performer, playing mainly guitar, saxophone and bass clarinet. Sharp has led many ensembles over the years, including the blues-oriented Terraplane and Orchestra Carbon
Cristian Amigo is an American composer, guitarist, producer, and educator who explores connections between art (classical and jazz) music and American popular and roots musics. Known as an acoustic and electric guitarist, and improviser, Amigo writes avant-music for chamber ensembles, orchestra, opera, theater, and film; he composes and performs in various roots and experimental music groups including The Gotham Roots Orchestra and Kingdom of Jones.
His awards include fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, and Meet the Composer. His work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council for the Arts, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the American Composers Forum, and Innova Recordings, among many others. The 2012 New Grove Dictionary of American Music will contain an entry on Cristian and his music. In 2011, he produced the recording NYFA: 25 Years of New York New Music, an anthology that includes music from Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, Joan Tower, Elliott Sharp, ETHEL, and hundreds of others.
Erbium was started by composers Dan Cooper and Daniel Palkowski, who met as an undergrad and a prof at Columbia University. On percussion is Cesare Papetti. The instrumentation features 7-string bass guitar, electro-acoustic flute, keyboards, & gesture-controlled electronics. The repertoire includes original compositions as well as arrangements of Liszt, Satie, and Prokofiev, among others. Festival appearances have included the 2011 American Composers Orchestra SoNiC Festival and the 2012 Spectrum NYX Prog Music Festival. Venues have included The Annex, Bar East, Caf? Brama, Drom NYC, Fat Baby, Galapagos, The Gershwin Hotel, Parkside Lounge, Solas, Spectrum NYC, The Stone, and Temple M. This season, Erbium will record a new CD on Composers Concordance Records, distributed by Naxos.
Blaise Siwula and Dom Minasi first met at The Knitting Factory (NYC) in 1996. A few weeks later they started to play together as a trio with drummer John Bollinger. Right from the beginning there was cohesiveness among them a In 1999 they were signed by CIMP Records. Their first CD was titled Dialing Privileges,. Eventually the trio became a duo. While in Tucson they recorded heir first duo CD. David Davila is a playwright and songwriter from South Texas who dreams of love and enchiladas. His works include the plays, MEN OF GOD, ADAN Y JULIO, CREDO, AZTEC PIRATES & THE INSIGNIFICANCE OF LIFE ON MARS, and WINE AND THE WAY WE EMBRACE. As half of the song-writing duo Havrilla & Davila, he has written lyrics for the musicals FUCKING BEAUTIFUL, and OCCUPY: THE MUSICAL. He recently completed a year-long songwriting project called 52 Songs, and presented a concert of the highlights called 52 SONGS: ABRIDGED. He is the founder of Lone Star Theatre Co, and a blogger for crazytownblog.com.
Greencard Wedding (Jody Christopherson and Michael de Roos) is a 2 person Indie Folk Beatbox Rock Band with Dutch influences. The band plays all original music in Dutch (with English subtitles) and in English (no subtitles). Instruments: guitar, beatbox, vocals, harmonies. Venues played; The Lower East Music Festival (Dixon Place Mainstage), The Parkside Lounge, Bowery Poetry Club, Center Stage, The Exquisite Corpse Festival, Richmod Shepard Theater, The Back Porch, as well as written music for the short film ?Like This? (Winner of the Exquisite Corpse Film Festival 2012), Eschaton Cabaret and written a Voter Awareness PSA for the Eisenhower Presidential Library. Rami plays worldwide with Raquy & the Cavemen, Alsarah & the Nubatones, Zikrayat, Cafe Antarsia Ensemble, and has opened for recording artists including Ani Difranco, K’naan, and Mos Def. He is a regular at NYC’s bellydance parties with local traditional musicians from across the mideast.
Based in New York with roots in Egypt, his repertoire include classical and folk traditions from the following regions: Arabic, Greek, Balkan, Turkish, Ladino, East African, and some North African. Rami’s grooves also can be found on many recordings, soundtracks, and live theatre productions. Rami composes and records the entire percussion section in tracks, playing tabla aka darbuka, riq, deff, clay tiblas, djembe, toumbak, and sagat.
Recognized as a leading musical folklorist and a master singer and guitarist, Gerard Edery has at his command a remarkable range of ethnic folk styles and traditions from around the world. He has been honored with the Sephardic Musical Heritage Award and is the recipient of a Meet the Composer grant for his original songs. His musical “Song of the Turtledove,” co-written with Noa Ain, was presented by the Premieres Festival at Lincoln Center. Highlights of Edery?s extensive performing career have included performances at Zankel Hall (Carnegie Hall), Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Merkin Concert Hall , Florence Gould Hall, and The United Nations in both New York City and Geneva, Victoria Hall in Geneva, The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Royce Hall in L.A., The Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, the Fez International Festival of Sacred Music in Morocco, the Festival Cervantino in Mexico, the Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam where he also served on the music competition jury, the Vilnius International Folk Festival, the Pax Sacred Music Festival and the Klaipeda Concert Series (with chamber orchestra) in Lithuania; in Poland at the International Folk Music Festival, the Zachor Music Festival in Bialystock and at the Warsaw Music Academy, among others. He has collaborated with some of the brightest stars on the world music circuit including Glen Velez, Ara Dinkjian, Amir Vahab, Alberto Mizrahi, Jamie Haddad, Aruna Sairam, Hamza El Din, Munir Bashir and George Mgrdichian. In addition to his busy concert schedule, he has released 14 CDs on the Sefarad Records label as well as a much acclaimed Sephardic Songbook.
Marios Aristopoulos is a composer and sound designer from Athens, Greece. He has studied in the University of London (Goldsmiths, SOAS) and holds a BA in Music, an MA in Composition, an MA in Ethnomusicology, and is currently studying towards a PhD. He has created sound and music for a variety of films, video games, documentaries, TV series, and plays in Greece and the UK, and has recently visited the States to write music for Dance for a Dollar (INTAR), The One Minute Play Festival (INTAR), and the Summer Shorts Festival (59E59 Theaters). He was selected amongst 4300 applicants for the 2012 Berlinale Talent Campus, and he is currently working as an intern for Michael Riesman and Philip Glass. www.marios-aristopoulos.com

THE GOTHAM ROOTS ORCHESTRA?s self-titled debut EP is a collection of live takes completed in one five-hour recording session, plus the field recording of the final track, Mighty Jesus. From the Band-influenced strains of Goodman Hero, the guitar boogie of Mississippi Bound, the apocalyptic roadhouse cover of Steely Dan?s Black Friday, the bilingual blues-rock of Dark Stone (Ay De Mi), through the battle hymn strains of Mighty Jesus, GRO’s music and lyrics sound out the NOW Americano life.
Isabel Castellvi lives and works in New York City as cellist, composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. As a versatile musician she performs and composes a broad range of music including classical, contemporary classical, experimental, world music, free-improvisation, electro-acoustic, folk, rock, avant-garde performance art, and hip-hop. She works regularly with composers developing and performing new works and has premiered hundreds of compositions. Collaborative creation is an integral part of her work, which has led to various projects with composers, dance, theater and visual artists.
Acclaimed by the New York Times for their ?expertly played? performances displaying ?meaty lower brass textures,? the Guidonian Hand is America?s leading modern trombone collective.Tireless advocates for contemporary music, this adventurous ensemble collaborates frequently with living composers, bringing to life compelling new works. They have commissioned many new works and received grants from organizations such as Chamber Music America, the Barlow Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, and New Music USA (formerly Meet the Composer). The Hand has premiered works by Eve Beglarian, Conrad Winslow, J. Mark Stambaugh, Galen Brown, and Jeremy Howard Beck. Current commissions include pieces by Mary Ellen Childs, Jeremy Howard Beck, Christian Gentry, and Alex Weiser, the group?s composer in residence for the 2012-13 season.
